Talking Hands

Talking Hands Fellowship is a ministry in KT reaching out to deaf people.

This friendly group is made up of profoundly deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and hearing people with a vision to reach *deaf people in London and the world for Jesus Christ.

The ministry was established in 1994, to welcome deaf people into KT and provide the means, by which they may be part of the Church family and access meetings and teachings, in their language, in order to understand, appreciate and grow in their faith and become disciples of Jesus Christ.

The primary focus of the ministry in the past was to facilitate the inclusion of deaf people by providing a loop system for hearing aid users and signing for British Sign Language (BSL) users. As the membership of the group has grown and the needs become more diverse, we have responded to the needs by providing additional methods of support, such Manual note taking and Electronic note taking (as and when needed), have been introduced.

*The term deaf – includes people with all levels of deafness/hearing loss

The Fellowship

Talking Hands is more than a group, we are a family. We support one another and care for each other.

The Fellowship as part of KT/LCC, which is a Cell Church, has established Cell groups in the North, South, East and West of London. This makes caring and supporting each other possible. Our Cell Groups meet once a week and are led by deaf members.

Every Sunday (except 3rd Sunday of each month), signing is provided at the 11am and 5pm services. On 3rd Sundays at 1pm, the group gathers at an alternative venue in Central London for a deaf service, with voice over (for hearing and deaf non-sign language users and those learning sign language) and a créche for children.

For details about other Fellowship meetings, when we meet and where we meet, please refer to our Talking Hands Fellowship facebook page.

Over the years, the leadership team has organised various events – such as visits to: Chessington World of Adventure, BA London Eye, London Aquarium, Thorpe Park, Alton Towers, Windsor Castle; arranged sessions of Ten Pin bowling, Basketball, Ice Skating and evenings out at various restaurants. In the past 2 years, the fellowship has also spent some time at Annan Court, KT/LCC’s retreat Centre in East Sussex. We have plans to go again this year from the 4th to 6th June 2010. It promises to be a fantastic time of fellowship, fun and relaxation for families, children and singles alike.

Participation in the Church

Members of KT/THF are encouraged to participate in the Welcome and Consolidation teams in order that they are available to meet, greet and encourage new members and new Christians into the Fellowship.

Discipleship and Leadership training programme

All the leaders (men and women) have been on a Living Free course as part of their leadership-training programme. Some have completed the Mastering Leadership Level 1 and will continue to Mastering Leadership Level 2. The deaf members of KT/THF are given a choice to study with hearing people or with deaf people.

KT/THF is very fortunate and blessed to have signers committed and dedicated to the ministry.

Signers are supported with a training and development programme. Every two weeks we focus on developing our receptive, production and translation skills. Furthermore, we spend time in the word and ministering to each other. Qualifications range from BSL Level 1 to BSL NVQ Level 4.

KT/LCC Satellite Churches

We have deaf members in our KT/LCC Satellite Church, Rivers of Life, in Walthamstow. Another deaf group in South London is in the process of being established. More information will be provided when this happens.

The Future

We are looking to expand the ministry and the services provided to the deaf. To do this we need volunteers:

Deaf volunteers

We need deaf volunteers to help with:

  • Evangelism
  • Administration
  • Signing – songs (in Church and on DVDs)
  • Teaching
  • Cell Leadership
  • Our quarterly TH Newsletter and producing tracts and other leaflets

Hearing volunteers

If you feel called to serve the deaf, please consider the area(s) you would like to be involved in:

  • Signing – (in Church and on DVDs)
  • Note taking (in service/meeting writing)
  • Electronic Notetaking (in-service/meeting typing)
  • Deaf-blind communication (manual)
  • Lip speaking
  • Administration

We have plans to provide subtitled DVD’s and set up a KT/LCC Deaf Ministry Website in the future.

It is God who heals- only He knows the day and the hour the healing will occur. As we wait, we facilitate the inclusion of the deaf in our services. We serve in expectation of the day when those who want may receive the greatest miracle of all- the miracle of Salvation; when a measure of faith is imparted into lives and change occurs in hearts and minds with the desire to live God’s way – Hebrews 11:1.

Are you looking for a Church that believes that deaf people are included in John 3:16; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31 and Matthew 28: 18-20, the great commission, and you want to serve God with other deaf and hearing people? We invite you to join us.

If you are not sure or you don’t know what God wants you to do, that’s fine. If you would like to know more about the ministry, please do not hesitate to contact:
