ABOUT BAPTISM
GETTING WATER BAPTISED IS A CLEAR COMMANDMENT FROM JESUS.
IT REPRESENTS OUR FIRST PUBLIC STEP OF OBEDIENCE IN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS.
Water baptism is a crucial event in the life of every believer’s journey with Jesus Christ. The Bible shows us that water baptism occurs after a believer declares their faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour. Jesus Himself chose to be water baptised, although He never sinned. Jesus did not need to repent because he never sinned, but was baptised by John the Baptist, as he said “it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:15).
Jesus saw the value, importance, and significance of water baptism and taught His disciples this. If it is true for Jesus, it must also be true for us! If you are exploring the Biblical commands behind being water baptised in the Christian faith, the following Bible verses offer a pathway to greater understanding and awareness of what it means to be water baptised.
Colossians 2:12-13
“having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins.”
Acts 2:38
“Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
John 3:5
“Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”
Your decision to be water baptised is your desire to be identified with Jesus. You are revealing the decision you made in your heart in accepting Jesus into your life. You are declaring your trust in Him, your motivation towards a new life found only in Christ, and your confidence in declaring this publicly! It is marking an early but significant milestone in your Christian walk.
Your baptism is a public pledge to walk with Jesus. This pledge is your declaration of allegiance and relationship with Him. Water baptism is a powerful symbol of your salvation in Christ and a seal of your Christian commitment and experience.
There is no unbaptised disciple in the New Testament! The order of the New Testament is very clear and helpful to remember – believe and be baptised. It is a necessary step in your walk with Jesus and in your obedience to Him and His Word. The New Testament reveals that believers got baptised the same day that they accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. The moment you come to faith – you are positioned for water baptism. Step forward and take the plunge.
